Why initiation?
Mantras by themselves are inert until empowered by someone who has achieved perfection in it. It is why the mantra texts mention all tantra mantras require initiation by a Guru or Acharya.
“Just like a body without Prana ( air ) is a corpse , a mantra without initiation will not work despite years of chanting”
– Saraswati Tantra
In an important tantra sastra, the Devi Rahasya Tantra, it mentions, unless a specific Kavacha or protective hymn, is recited along with the mantra, even millions of chants of Ganesha mantra will not give results.
Why Ganesha?
The ancient texts say
The Sun ( Surya ) grants freedom from disease, the Fire (Agni ) grants glory or splendour, Siva grants Jyana, Janardhana ( Vishnu ) grants emancipation.
Durga grants protection, Bhairava confers success against heavy odds. Saraswati gives the essence of learning.
Lakshmi grants material prosperity, Parvati confers good luck and Sachi (spouse of Indra) grants increase in progeny.
All these boons however, one may beg from Ganapati, who confers all the above and more.
Similarly, the Tantra Sastras state “Kalau Chandi Vinayakau,” highlighting that in the age of Kali Yuga, the mantra of Vinayaka, or Ganesha, is particularly potent.
However, for the mantra to be effective, it must be properly initiated by a qualified Guru or Acharya.
This underscores the importance of Ganesha in rituals and the necessity of proper initiation for the mantra’s success.
