Somavara Vrat – Lord Shiva’s Grace

Uncategorized

There is something quietly powerful about Mondays in the month of Shravan.

While calendars may differ; some following Kashi traditions, others guided by the lineages of Kanchi or Sringeri; one truth remains unchanged: Shravan Somavara is sacred to Lord Shiva. Whether you observe it in the North or the South, during Adhika Masa or regular Shravan, the current of grace flows the same.

But why is this Somavara Vrata so revered?

The Skanda Purana tells us that Chandra Deva himself undertook this vrata to please Shiva after being cursed by Daksha. Through sincere observance, he was freed. That is why elders say this vrata can even help dissolve stubborn karmas and long-standing suffering. When the Moon needed Shiva, he chose a Monday.

That detail alone should make us pause.

Traditionally, women pray during Shravan Somavara for a dharmic husband or virtuous children. But the deeper truth?

The vrata is not transactional. It is transformational. Fasting disciplines the body. Reciting “Namah Shivaya” steadies the mind. Offering Vilva leaves and Abhisheka softens the heart.

And when body, mind, and heart align; Shiva enters effortlessly.

Scriptures even declare that completing eight Mondays of Somavara Vrata brings merit equal to grand offerings: countless Ganga abhishekas, gifting thousands of cows, even charity performed at Kurukshetra during an eclipse. Hyperbole? Perhaps. Or perhaps it is scripture’s poetic way of saying: sincerity outweighs scale.

Even if you do not know elaborate paddhatis, do not let that stop you.

Offer Vibhuti. Pour water on a Shiva Linga. Chant His Namavalli. Keep it simple.

Shiva has never demanded sophistication; only sincerity.

Adhika Masa makes this period even more potent. Sri Krishna himself warns that neglecting vrata during this sacred time is a missed spiritual opportunity. When time itself becomes holy, we are invited to participate.

And if you feel called to go deeper; to understand not just the ritual but the Tantra behind it; our circle:  https://shorturl.at/6gxgH is open. A space where practice becomes experience, and devotion becomes living grace. Step in when you’re ready.
